Removing the Landing Window

As part of the next phase of work we’re undertaking, we have a lot of windows to move. Last weekend we made a start on the first one. This one is above the front door, and in the landing space outside our bedroom. This window needed to come out to make room for the porch above the front door.

Rory enjoying his old perch – don’t mention the tiled windowsill…

The first job was to knock the layer of plaster off around the windowsill, and the concrete render that was underneath to expose the lintel. Lee was hoping to salvage it and reuse it in a new location, so far so good…

Next step was getting the glass out of the window…

Followed by removing the actual frame…

And then cleaning up the brickwork around the hole ready to brick back up…

The next step was removing some of the existing brickwork so that we could key in the new bricks when we block up the hole.

The last step for the day was to clean up…

…and patch up the hole using plywood, ready to finish off another day…

Next weekend we’re planning to carry on, we still need to brick up the gap, remove the lintel above it, and then make a new opening next to the window. Fingers crossed it all goes well as the plywood wall window is already driving me mad!
